Meet the Ambassadors - Jordan!

We've been meaning to post Jordan's interview for a few months, but the fall got really busy! If you follow Jordan on Instagram (@theclothway), you're familiar with her crisp, colourful shots of AppleCheeks. Meet the mama behind the camera!

1. Tell us about your journey with AppleCheeks!  How did you first learn about them?

I first heard about AppleCheeks in early 2012 a few months after having my second child. At the time I was considering making the switch to cloth diapers and one of my friends (who happened to be my neighbour at the time) told me about Amy! My friend had known Amy when she lived in Montreal and had attended church with her. Once I heard about the company I started looking into it and was pretty impressed with the cuteness factor of their diapers in comparison with other diapers I was looking into. This was also right around the time that Purple Rain was released and I remember thinking that AppleCheeks had such awesome colours! Unfortunately I didn't end up switching to cloth diapers at this time (I kick myself now thinking about all the HTF colours I could have in my stash!) as I had a bit of a time adjusting to life with two kids. It wasn't until two years later (Spring 2014) when my third baby was 8 months old that I decided to take the plunge to try cloth. I started out using a few different brands of diapers but AppleCheeks very quickly became my favourite and I started slowly adding to my AppleCheeks stash.

2. Let's meet your family! What bums are or have been diapered in your house? Is your husband supportive of cloth diapering? What's his favorite colour?

My husband and I are both from Southern Ontario but since getting married in 2006 we have moved 8 times and lived in 4 provinces! We are finally back in Calgary which is the place we have called home the longest and we feel that this is the last step in the journey for our family at least for a while!

Even though I started cloth diapering when my kids were aged 4, 2.5 and 8 months they have all worn AppleCheeks! Part of the reason I switched to cloth was to reduce the amount of waste that my family was producing when I had two kids in diapers. My back step was usually the dumping grounds for our dirty diapers and I was getting disgusted by the pile of poop sitting there at the end of every week. When I started using cloth my son Cohen was 2.5 at the time and still in diapers as well as my 8 month old daughter Novah. My oldest son Marshal has worn and continues to wear AppleCheeks to bed at night to help deal with bed wetting problems. It's been an awesome way to deal with less wet sheet laundry and is obviously a huge money saver. My son Cohen is now 4 and has since learned to use the potty while Novah who is now 2 continues to wear only AppleCheeks.

My husband Dan is totally supportive of cloth diapering. While he doesn't quite have the love and passion for it that I do, he completely agrees that cloth diapering is the better choice for us. When I was working close to full time last year he completely took over the diaper laundry including stuffing diapers! He might not have a favourite AppleCheeks colour but he once said to me- Disposables seem so disgusting now that we use cloth!

3. Do you have a local retailer you love to support, or are you a fluff mail junkie?

When I started cloth diapering I lived in Calgary and ordered from Calgary Cloth Diaper Depot. I continue to order most of my diapers from CCDD as I really like Miranda and enjoy supporting her family. Of course I love ordering retailer exclusives and other unique AppleCheeks products from all the other amazing retailers out there. In my travels across Canada I have enjoyed looking for local cloth diaper shops and checking out their AppleCheeks collections. But lets be honest getting fluff mail is fun and much easier than going into a physical store with all my kids!

4. If you could only have two colours in your stash, what would they be?

If I could have only two AppleCheeks colours! How can you even ask me that question!? Ok this is seriously difficult but I'd have to chose Riptide and Sailors Blue (even though I've never actually seen one in real life!) or maybe Riptide and Serendipity. I think Riptide is my all time favourite colour.

 5. What do you like to do as a family?

My family loves to explore the outdoors which is a biog reason we moved back to the west. We love the mountains and enjoy casual hikes and walks. Hopefully once the kids get older we can start doing more adventurous hikes again.

We also love going for family bike rides and taking the kids to the park. We enjoy get together with friends and eating and socializing with family and loved ones.

 6. Destash, Unicorn, Permastash: which color goes in each category?

If I HAD to destash one colour I would probably choose Cherry Tomato! Don't hate me. I'm just not the biggest RED person. Don't get me wrong, red is a classic colour and its obviously key for holidays like Christmas and Canada Day, I just don't tend to wear it often or put my kids in it. Permastash would have to be Riptide as I already said it's my favourite. And my Unicorn of Unicorns would be Samoa!

7. Other than being selected as an Ambassador, what is your favorite memory in your AppleCheeks history?

My favorite moment in my AppleCheeks history was being selected as a Superfan in January of last year. It was honestly a complete surprise to me and I was in complete shock when I opened my mailbox to find a Superfan package inside. I'm pretty sure most of you saw the video of my happy dance upon receiving the package! It was really exciting to get to participate in the fun of reveal day and help to build up the fan anticipation of a new AppleCheeks colour!

I am so glad that I found AppleCheeks and that they have been the right cloth diapering choice for our family. I love the company, the owners, the products and the community. Using AppleCheeks has really been an awesome choice for us! So excited that I get to share my love of this company further by being a brand ambassador.

Thanks so much for your time, Jordan! You announced some big news after initially answering these questions - baby #4 is on the way! We are so excited for you during this special time in your life as your family grows. We can't wait to see that sweet little squish rocking some AppleCheeks!

A First Birthday Party, AppleCheeks-Style!

Several weeks ago, one of our fans in the Facebook group Peace. Love. AppleCheeks. started posting some logo-inspired items she was making for her son's first birthday party. The end result? This totally cute AppleCheeks-style birthday part for Xaviar! Ashley, the mom behind this event, was kind enough to answer a few questions about it, which, in our humble opinions, looks like a FABULOUS time.

1. How did you come up with the idea to do an AppleCheeks-themed birthday party?
My husband and I were discussing birthday themes when he "jokingly" (so he says) brings up AppleCheeks. My eyes lid up in excitement and we started designing Xaviar's party right away!

Props to this awesome dad for helping to plan AND wearing an epic shirt!

2. How long did it take to create all of the amazing custom decorations? Did you save any of them?
Approximately 4-5 weeks with designing, cutting and putting together included.
The confetti alone took approximately 7 hours!

I saved my son's cup that we gave as party favours for the kids and my son's banner to put in his room that I'm currently designing to be AppleCheeks theme.

Super cute favour cups!

3. How did your friends, family and party attendees respond to the decorations?
They LOVED everything and kept asking questions about AppleCheeks which made me happy. Xaviar's party even has a future momma thinking of using AppleCheeks!

We love the use of the diapers as balloon weights!

4. Do you have friends and family who use AppleCheeks?
Yes! Carolyn P. and her family were at Xaviar's party rocking her nursing scarf!

She is indeed rocking that scarf!

5. Did having an online community of fellow fans of the brand have an influence on your decision to have an AppleCheeks-themed party?

Being in the online community has helped me a lot with overcoming PPD so I will say yes! My love for AppleCheeks is just for the diapers but for the community and friendship it has given me.

We are ALL about community...and cake. ;)

6. What does your family think about the fan culture surrounding the brand?
My family at first thought I was crazy, but now are in love with how much passion and love I have for AppleCheeks!

The incredible cake! So cute.

What about you? Have you planned or decorated events around AppleCheeks? We'd love to see them - tag us on Instagram, share on our Facebook wall or send a note to natalie@applecheeks.com! You never know, we might feature YOUR event on our social media channels!

p.s. We had the pleasure of meeting Ashley and her family when they came to our Toronto fan meet and greet!

How Did 2015 Wrap Up?

Happy New Year! We're a week into a brand new, fresh year, so how about a look back to how 2015 finished up? You know without asking that there was gorgeous fluff involved!

Did you see our latest retailer exclusive? Prairie Sky, a stunning and rich blue shade, is available only from Tiny TreeHugger. This beautiful hue comes in size 1 and 2 covers and all three sac sizes!

As the longest online and brick & mortar boutique serving Southern Manitoba, TTH is pleased to provide the highest quality eco-friendly family items ranging from litterless lunch goods, baby carriers, to cloth diapers and necessities for living a green life, right from the heart of the prairies. Relive the fun of our Great White North reveal event and catch Amy & Ilana McKenzie, along with Pam, owner of TTH, acting like, well, Canadians! Love your toque! Pass the maple syrup, eh?

Just a few weeks later, we unveiled our latest print additions to the lineups. You want more apples? You got 'em! We heard your requests for additional colourways in the ever-popular Delicious theme and presented To the Core (inspired by Lavender Fields and RipTide) and Out of the Blue (inspired by Periwinkle and Sailors Blue).

These fun little numbers are available currently in size 1 and size 2 covers, along with size 1 sacs and MiniZips, and will soon be up for grabs in size 3 and Learning Pants. Yes, you read that right! Stay tuned to our Facebook page and Instagram feed (@applecheeksdipe) for all the details as we strive to meet your needs (and dreams!) with our product lineup!

Learning Pants 101

At long last, Learning Pants are finally available and starting to see some use by our very patient fans and their little ones! Have questions about the sizing or how on earth to get those inserts in the size S? This short and sweet post is for YOU!

Made from a poly-cotton blend and lined with PUL where your little person most needs it, AppleCheeks Learning Pants are the perfect transition product for the child who is mostly ready for underwear but still has the occasional accident.

Two layers of super absorbent microterry in the wet zone make these pants perfect for those moments when the potty is just a little too far, and for kids who really can't hold it, an extra insert boosts absorbency right where it's needed!

Please note that these Learning Pants are not intended to replace diapers. If your child is showing signs of readiness and awareness, then Learning Pants are for her!

If you're using the Learning Pants, you may have noticed that the included insert can be a little tricky to place in the size S. Natalie made a short video to demonstrate one way that may make it less stressful. Have other tips? Feel free to comment or send her an email: natalie@applecheeks.com! We'd LOVE to hear your feedback on these, such as how they work for you and how they fit your little one. Reach out to us here, via email, on Facebook or Instagram!

Retailer Exclusives: Mermaids at Play, FAQs answered!

If you’re familiar with AppleCheeks fandom, you’ll know that mythical creatures are an everyday part of the lore and fun - especially unicorns. Second only to our love of those beautiful glittery beings is our affection for rulers of another realm - mermaids. We couldn’t resist a little splashy fun for revealing our latest retailer exclusive - Ocean Playground from Fluffy Bottom Babies! Check out our reveal video:

This visual stunner marks the first time that retailer exclusive is a print. It comes in size 1 and size 2 covers, all three sizes of storage sacs (MiniZips, size 1 and size 2), as well as custom bandana bibs to match the items. The retailer Fluffy Bottom Babies is located in Nova Scotia, known as Canada’s “Ocean Playground.”

It was our pleasure to work with Ivy Liu, owner of Fluffy Bottom Babies, for over a year (!!!) to bring you this lovely fluff collection. Fluffy Bottom Babies is an independent retailer - both brick and mortar and online - born in Bedford, Nova Scotia in 2011. They specialize in hand-picked unique baby and children’s products, including: eco-friendly and sustainable feeding items, modern cloth diapers, safe baby carriers, natural skincare products, non-plug toys as well as stylish handmade clothing and footwear for children up to 6 years of age.

Curious about the process of retailer exclusives? Here are some answers to FAQs!

1. What's the first step in the retailer exclusive process? How are retailers selected?

All the retailers who wish to enter into the drawing for this may do so and then random.org selects two winners. We usually make it so that one Canadian and one US retailer are drawn.

2. How much input does the retailer have in colour selection?

Very much! They pretty much tell us whatever colour they want and, assuming it doesn`t conflict with what we have planned, we go with it.

3. Who picks the name for the exclusive?

Usually Amy in conjunction with the retailer.

4. Who designs the custom tag?

Ilana works with the logo of the retailer and designs it with her mad skills.

5. What determines how long a retailer holds an exclusive?

There are many factors that come into play but generally a retailer holds an exclusive for 2 years.

6. Is there a maximum number of retailers for exclusives at any one point in time?

We try to do two a year, spread throughout the year. That doesn`t always happen but its always the plan. ;)

7. What's your favourite part of the retailer exclusive process?

Our favourite part of this process is working closely with a retailer in a collaborative way, towards a common goal. Also, finalizing the colour and name and seeing the custom label are all up there too!
