Cultivating Community: a Fan Feature

If you're familiar with our blog, from time to time we chat with individuals in our fabulous community of fans. This week, meet Katey!

1. How did you learn about AppleCheeks?

We have a local shop and when we decided to finally take the leap and switch to cloth when our oldest was about 6 months. I was intimidated but all the information and we decided to try a few different brands. I could probably tell you every diaper we got because I was so excited! I remember we bought Wingin It, Pink About It, St Lucia, Steel me and Love Happens. So I guess it was pure chance I happened to find AppleCheeks!
2. Did you use cloth diapers before using AppleCheeks, or was it your first brand?

I bought a bunch of different brands at first but after our son was born we quickly realized the same brands we used with our daughter fit him differently, with the exception of the AppleCheeks we had. He was a chunky boy at 9lbs 5oz at birth and with the ruffles they hugged his thighs without leaving red marks like any other brand tended to do.

3. Other than the awesome products, did anything attract you to the brand, or make you want to continue using it?

I stumbled on Peace Love AppleCheeks (PLAC) by myself shortly after joining the BST page and the reason I fell head over heels for the brand was the community of PLAC. The tight-knit group of woman who were always building each other up was encouraging and contagious and I quickly sold the other brands we had and went straight into exclusively using AppleCheeks. I want to surround myself in a positive environment and support system and I found that in PLAC - and in turn found that within the brand.
4. Do you have a local community of parents with similar parenting style?

I do have a somewhat local community of parents, it's not an abundance of other parents but I know that it's spreading like wildfire. I have people ask me about Jensen's diapers anywhere online, when we're out and it makes me almost proud when someone makes the switch. I know people are sometimes really intimidated by the idea of cloth diapers, I was before we switched, and there's this idea that you're essentially playing in the toilet half the time. I want to break through that idea and show people how much more cloth diapers are. It's saving hundreds of dollars, it's keeping the blow outs where they belong! And if I'm honest it's also about how much cuter fluff bums are!

5. How has the positive online community surrounding AppleCheeks benefitted you and your family?

I think after being diagnosed with Post Partum Depression it's helped me a lot with staying positive and having this group of women where I could reach out and get help with anything and helping me get through any of the feelings I was drowning in or losing myself to. In turn, it helped me with my relationship with Joey and it's helped me find better ways to parent and react to things that would upset me before. Even with medication it's still important to surround yourself with people who love you and support you and I found that in AppleCheeks.

6.  Do you have a spouse, significant other or co-parent in your household? If so, how does that person react to your online community being a part of your life?

I do! I'm very lucky to have found my fiancé Joey who supports me whole heartedly with cloth diapering the kids. He loves PLAC because he's seen how much people there have helped when he wasn't able to. He sees the friendships I've made and sees how much that helps me in my day to day life. PLAC has helped me in more ways than I could count and I think we're both pretty thankful I found it.

We must admit Joey is a pretty good sport (even if he is on pain meds here)! ;)

7.  If you could give a new mom one piece of advice, what would it be?
This one's hard because there's so much I would tell her! I think the first thing I would say, "It's okay." There are so many days I doubt my ability in mothering two kids. There are days where you get absolutely everything you wanted to get done and more. Then there are days where you cannot find the time or energy to even make the kids a real sit down meal. The most important thing is to find that middle ground and being ok with not being the mom society wants you to be or pressure you to be. It's so important to remember that you are human and you are important too.
Glitter makes any day brighter!
Thanks for your time, Katey! We're glad you found our community to be a part of the fun!
